Though the band was moderately successful, it wasn't enough to pay the bills so
in 1989, he moved to Toronto to find work. Once working and settled, he
started to visit and perform at the weekend jams to get to know the network of
musicians.
At 25 he helped form "The Delta River Band", a five piece cover band playing
mostly Country but with a little Southern Rock flare. They played many Toronto
venues such as Spurs, The Country Nugget, The Birchmount Tavern, The
Palimino Hotel, and the infamous Jokers in Ajax to name a few. The band was
praised for their harmonies, high energy, and great sound.
The band packed it up in 97 with economic times hitting the Toronto Venues
hard and it was then that Darren teamed up with Larry Hachey to form the duo
"Freeman & Hachey". The two have since performed together hundreds of times
and have written some great songs. Some of which are destined to be recorded
on Darren's first original album.
Today he keeps busy with his solo show, his new Duo
with Paul Kneller, and with his band Off Duty. Darren
plans to continue to perform, write, entertain, and enjoy
making his living at what he loves.
Darren Freeman was born June 5th, 1967 in Toronto Ontario to Owen & Audrey Freeman.
When he was 6, his parents moved he and his siblings back to their hometown Norris Arm
Newfoundland where he was introduced to music at an early age with his Dad's Charley Pride &
Merle Haggard albums. Growing up, he was influenced by his increasing love for country music
while at the same time absorbing the rock and roll radio. He picked up his dads guitar at 15
and taught himself enough to put a few songs together. Years went by, the guitars got better,
and so did the sounds coming out of it.
At the age of 20 he was offered a spot as guitarist in their local cover band "Midnight Blue"
consisting of a mixture of Country and Rock and Roll. Darren joined the act and the band went
on to play venues all across the Island. Darren was learning how to entertain from playing one
of the best audiences in the world.
